Brunswick - Calvin Leonard Wagar, 84, a lifelong resident of Moonlawn Road in Brunswick, passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his loved ones on Monday morning, May 4, 2026, after a brief illness.

Born in Brunswick, NY, September 25, 1941, Calvin was the son of the late Raymond L. and Hazel E. (Peckham) Wagar, and for over 31 years, the best friend and longtime companion of Margaret “Peggy” Boomhower of Valatie who survives.

Calvin attended Brunswick District School 14 through eighth grade, when he left school to help work on the family farm.  With his late, older brother, Kenneth C. “Ken” Wagar, they worked Wagar Family Dairy Farm, producing milk, hay, and lumber. With Ken’s passing in 2003, ownership of the farm was transferred to Calvin and he owned and operated the farm on his own until 2005, when he decided to “retire” from farming and focus his time and energy on splitting and selling firewood.

In his younger days, when there was quiet time, Calvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and having his “Genny” beer.  He was an avid fan of NASCAR, cheering for Jimmy Johnson, and of local dirt track racing, supporting local drivers, Kenny Tremont, Marc Johnson, and Nick Arnold.  During the week, he would take his daily “rides around the block” when his favorite TV shows,  The Price is Right and Bonanza were not on.  On Saturdays, he enjoyed going to the Racino with Peggy and afterward stopping to get an ice cream at Guptill’s and people watching.

In addition to Peggy, Calvin is survived by his beloved daughter, Danielle Boomhower, son-in-law and buddy, John “Apples” Albanese, his sister, Dorothy Maxwell of Brunswick, his brother, Alton Wagar of Troy, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is also survived by his grand fur babies (Meow-Meow, Lil Man, Spice, and Callie), and the many friends he made through farming, being a good neighbor, and a great man.

In addition to his parents and older brothers, Kenneth, Floyd and John Wagar, Calvin was predeceased by his sisters, Naomi Wagar, Helen Kreil, Bertha Kaschak, Alice Hetman, Lena Colty, and Myra Wagar.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home, 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown.  A funeral service for Calvin will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026 at 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home with family friend, Rev. Scott Matson, officiating.  Burial will take place following the service at the Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick.

At the request of Calvin’s family, contributions in his memory, if desired may be made to Community Hospice as a way to assist the family in saying a very warm thank you for their compassion and support shown while Calvin was under their excellent care.
