Poestenkill- Evan S. Eisenhandler, 75, a longtime resident of Poestenkill, died peacefully Wednesday morning, October 9, 2024, at the Evergreen Common Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in East Greenbush following a long illness.
Born July 14, 1949, in Brooklyn, NY, Evan was the son of the late Sydney and Frances (Baranow) Eisenhandler and, for over 55 years, the loving husband and best friend of Beth Ellen (Shaver) Eisenhandler, who survives. Evan and Beth met through a mutual friend and were married on June 28, 1969.
Following his family’s relocation from New York City to the Albany area, Evan graduated from Guilderland High School and attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
Following their marriage in 1969, Evan and Beth moved to Poestenkill in 1971 and established their home and raised their family.
Evan worked for the D & H Railroad as a mechanic, the Brotherhood of Maintenance Way Employees’ Union as a legislative representative, and more recently, was again employed by the former D & H Canadian Pacific Rail as their Safety Manager. Most recently, he worked as the NYS Executive Director of Operation Lifesaver from which he retired in 2021.
Evan was proud to have served in the New York State Army National Guard for over a decade.
Evan lived his life in service to the public and his community. He endeavored to improve public safety in many areas, both professionally and in his volunteer efforts. He began his service as a junior member of the Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Company and later was the Emergency Medical Services 1 for Rensselaer County for 11 years. He assisted as an EMT for Bruen Rescue in East Greenbush and the North Greenbush Ambulance. He was extremely proud to have served 50+ years in the Poestenkill Fire and Ambulance Companies.
Evan had a myriad of interests, including shooting, cars, flying airplanes, and was an avid reader. He especially enjoyed classic cars, driving to and showing his restored 1981 Chevrolet Corvette at many car shows. He especially loved taking it on short rides in the country with Beth by his side.
In addition to his wife, Beth, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in law, Mark A. Eisenhandler and Debbie Healey of New Paltz and Paul M. and Michelle Eisenhandler of Wynantskill, five grandchildren, three nieces, and a nephew. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Joel and Roseanne.
A funeral service for Evan will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown, with Rev. Tryg Tomlinson officiating. Burial will follow in Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30-11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service.
