Tomhannock. Giesela (Amann) Madigan, ‘Gie’ 83, lifelong resident of Pittstown died peacefully Friday, November 21, 2025 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy with family by her side.
Born in Troy December 9th, 1941, Gie was the only daughter of the late Ludwig and Pauline (Wiesenberg) Amann. A graduate of Hoosic Valley Central School she married Paul H. Madigan in August of 1960, Working side by side on their dairy farm until 1974. Gie then began her career working for Union Carbide/Eveready Battery in Bennington VT. as one of the first women in the male dominated field of equipment mechanic.
Gie was known as a fearless outdoorswoman who would load up her horses and go on a spontaneous overnight pack trip. She was a lifetime member of Grafton Trail Riders, and a leader in countless Dude Ranch Trail Horse Association rides in Luzerne NY. A couple of notable rides she was involved in were the Liberty rides; one starting in Montreal Canada and ending in Luzerne NY, the other started in Williamstown MA and ended in Luzerne NY. All done on horseback. To know her was to hear “just five more miles” in answer to any question about time or distance.
She was forever in the pursuit of learning new things. She was self-taught in computer knowledge & use and kept up with technology as it advanced. She also believed in passing on her knowledge. She did so through clubs such as Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4-H Agriculture Club leadership. To be taught something by her was to know she cared for you.
Gie is survived by her two brothers, Richard (Paula) Amann of Johnsonville and Karl Amann in Oklahoma, her three children; Colleen Madigan, James (Maxine) Madigan, and Barbara (Paul) Yacevich, 3 grandchildren; Kristi Ratoon, Jeffery (Laura) Yacevich, Kyle (Katie) Yacevich and 2 step grandchildren, Michael and David Stevens. Great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and husband Paul.
Per her wishes there will be no service. Memorial contributions may be made, in her name to the Pittstown Volunteer Emergency, Corps 60 Parker School Rd, Johnsonville, NY 12094, the Rennslaer County Meals on Wheels, or to the Equine Advocates Inc. 3212 NY-66 Valatia NY 12184.
