Hoosick Falls- Janice Ellen (LaBarron) Tate, 86, a lifelong resident of Hoosick Falls, died peacefully, Saturday July 13, 2024 in the comfort of her home with her husband and family by her side, following a short illness.
Born in Hoosick Falls, July 3, 1938, Janice was the daughter of the late Clayton and Elsie May (Gifford) LeBarron and for over 64 years the loving and beloved wife of Gerald J. “Jerry” Tate of Hoosick Falls, who survives. After being high school sweethearts, Janice and Jerry were married on April 9, 1960.
Janice was a graduate of the former Walter E. Wood High School in Hoosick Falls and took classes at Southern Vermont College.
While raising her family, Janice was employed by several area businesses and agencies including the New York State Dept. of Education, Oak Industries, the former Southern Vermont College, and most recently at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. After many years of service, she retired from the work force in 2005.
In addition to her work life and caring for her husband, family, and home, Janice was a member and past Deacon of the First United Presbyterian Church in Hoosick Falls, volunteered at the HACA (Hoosick Area Church Assoc.) food pantry, was a member of the Hoosick Falls B.P.O.E. #178 Auxiliary, volunteered as a greeter at the Danforth Adult Center and was on the Sunshine Committee at the Hoosick Falls Senior Center. For many years she was the chairwoman and coordinator of the Walter E. Wood/Hoosick Falls Central School annual reunion committee.
Janice was an amazingly social person who was a friend to everyone. She enjoyed visits with family and friends and never missed sending a card or note to friends on their birthday or anniversary. She loved to travel to Cape Cod and York Beach, ME in summer and fall as well as being a snowbird with Jerry to Panama City Beach, FL where she made many friends. Among her most special of trips was a visit with Jerry’s cousins, Stan and Helen Scott, to Sedona, AZ where she remarked, “This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.” Janice loved to cook and bake and enjoyed sharing the gifts of baked goods with her many friends and neighbors.
Janice is survived by her husband, Jerry, two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott M. and Lori Tate of Northbridge, MA, A.J. Tate and Lisa Siragusa of Rochester, NY and a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen J. and Stacey Dunn of Richmond, VA, a brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Claudia LeBarron of S. Wilmington, NC, sister-in-law, Fran LeBarron of Wilton, CT, brother-in-law, Grant Taylor of Albany, brother- and sister-in-law Donald and Marilyn Tate of Hoosick Falls, sister-in-law Judy Tate of Eagle Bridge, nine grandchildren, Michael Tate, Ginny (and Blake) Sanderson, Kristin Tate (and fiancé Patrick Knerr,) Christopher Vertefeuille, Jackson Tate, Regan Dunn, Brady Dunn, Hanna Ritch, and Dennis Ritch, three great-grandchildren, Guilietta Vertefeuille, Luke Sanderson, and Ethan Sanderson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Janice was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Ronald Phelps, sisters, Sandra Taylor and Clara LeBarron, brother Dennis LeBarron, and brother-in-law Ronald Tate.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 from 4:00–7:00PM at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 New York Route 7, located in Raymertown. A funeral service for Janice will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at 10:30AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.
