
Salisbury, NC- Karen S. (Smith) Sponable, 68, formerly of Brunswick, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 23, 2025, at her home in Salisbury, NC, with her loving family by her side.
Born November 8, 1956, in Glens Falls, NY, Karen was the daughter of the late David and Doris (Ely) Smith and, for over 40 years, the beloved wife of James Sponable of Salisbury, who survives. Karen and James were married on September 15, 1984, in Eagle Mills, NY.
For many years, Karen was employed as a court reporter by the New York State Court System.
Karen was a loving wife and mother. She was active with the American Kennel Club and loved showing her Tibetan Terriers. She was a proud former member of the Brunswick Elks Ladies Auxiliary, as well as a current member of the Salisbury Elks Club. Additionally, she loved trips to the beach, outings and luncheons with friends, and watching hummingbirds while enjoying her coffee.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, James, her son, Kyle and his wife Brittany of Salisbury, her brother, David Smith and his wife Evelyn, her aunt, Joan McClenning and her husband Robert of Granville, NY, her aunt, Shirlene Ely, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, Karen was predeceased by her sister, Linda, and a brother, Wayne.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 11:00 – 2:00 pm at the Howard B. Tate and Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown. A funeral service for Karen will follow at 2:15 p.m.
Burial will take place later this spring in the Eagle Mills Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
