Brunswick- Sara A. (Writer) Joyce, 88, a longtime resident of Center Brunswick and more recently Diamond Ridge Senior Retirement Community in Troy, died peacefully, Thursday, April 23, 2026 at the Victorian Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Schaghticoke following a short illness.
Born in Troy, September 11, 1937, Mrs. Joyce was the daughter of the late Herbert A. and Anne C. (Russell) Writer formerly of Wynantskill and for 13 years the wife of William J. Joyce Jr. of Ballston Spa who survives.
Mrs. Joyce was a graduate of Troy High School and earned both a Bachelor and Master of Physical Education Degree at Russell Sage College in Troy.
Fresh out of college in 1959, Mrs. Joyce accepted a position at Troy High School, and in 1960, accepted her next position at Tamarac High School in Brunswick where she was both a Physical Education teacher and a coach of many sports teams. Through her own physical fitness, she was a good example and was very proud to have taught so many talented students the value of life long physical fitness, she retired from Tamarac after 37 years of service in 1996.
Mrs. Joyce was an avid runner throughout her adult life and could be seen running Route 7 in Brunswick all year in every type of weather conditions.
She loved riding and caring for her horses as a younger woman which led to her becoming an accomplished equestrian who competed in the top level American Horse Show Association (AHSA - now U.S. Equestrian Federation) A rated shows in both Hunters and Jumper competition. She also served as an AHSA Judge and officiated at A rated horseshows for many years.
In addition to her former husband, Mrs. Joyce is survived by a son, William J. Joyce III of Brunswick and two sisters-in-law.
Relatives and friends are invited to call and wear a splash of Blue, (Mrs. Joyce’s favorite color), on Monday, April 27, 2026 at the Howard B. Tate and Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown from 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday morning, April 28, 2026 at 10:00 A.M. at Elmwood Hill Cemetery, 51 Belle Avenue, in Troy.
At the request of Mrs. Joyce’s family, memorial contributions if desired may be made to the Brittonkill Educational Foundation, 3992 NY-2, Troy, NY 12180 in memory of Sara A. Joyce.
