Brunswick- Shirley Mae (Schellenger) Garmley, 91, a longtime Brunswick resident, died peacefully Wednesday, April 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at her home, following a short illness.

Born in the Town of Stillwater August 22, 1933, Shirley is the daughter of the late Ross and Ruth (Fowler) Schellenger and, for over 60 years, the wife of the late Elmer W. Garmley Jr., who predeceased her November 30, 2010.

Shirley was a graduate of Stillwater High School and attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.

In addition to raising her family and running her household, Shirley was employed at several area businesses through the years.  Most recently, she was employed as a sales and service control clerk at the former Cluett Peabody & Company, Arrow shirt manufacturing in Troy.

In her quiet time, of which there was not much, Shirley enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening, going for drives with her late husband, Elmer, especially in their Thunderbird, and more recently, watching TV.  Above all else, her most favorite pastime was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and her friends, whom she loved and was so very proud of.

Shirley is survived by her children, Lina (the late Robert) Garmley of Saratoga, Sheila (the late Paul) Phillips of Brunswick, Kevin and Nanette Garmley of Brunswick, Bruce and Rhonda Garmley of Brunswick, Todd Garmley of Brunswick, and Marlene (the late Tory) Maloney of Brunswick, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  In addition to her husband, parents, and sons-in-law, she was predeceased by two brothers, James Schellenger and Karl Schellenger, and a sister, Mary (Schellenger) Tucker.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown, with longtime family friend, Rev. John Roberts, officiating.  Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Gerald B. H. Solomon, Saratoga National Veterans Cemetery in Schuylerville.  Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 6, from 4:00-7:00 p.m.

At the request of the Garmley family, and as a way to express their gratitude for the excellent, compassionate care shown to Shirley by the visiting nurses in her home, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 315 South Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208, in memory of Shirley M. Garmley.
