Pittstown- Virginia A. (Smith) Matala, 91, a longtime resident of the Cooksboro hamlet of Pittstown, wife and partner of a dairy farmer, died peacefully at her residence, overlooking her farm fields and birds in her backyard, following a short illness with her family by her side.

Born in Cohoes January 8, 1934, Mrs. Matala was the daughter of the late Charles and Mildred (Hosmer) Smith and, for over 66 years, the wife of the late Harry Matala, who predeceased her January 9, 2022.  Mr. and Mrs. Matala were married on October 29, 1955.

Mrs. Matala was raised in Lansingburgh and attended Lansingburgh Public Schools.  She was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School.

In addition to raising her six children and caring for her home, she was employed as a nurse’s aide at the Albany County Nursing Home.  After many years of service, she retired in July 1999.

Mrs. Matala was a member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Cohoes.  In her quiet time, of which there was not very much, she assisted her late husband with his dairy farm chores, including driving the tractor at haying time, and relaxed by growing beautiful flowers and plants.

Mrs. Matala is survived by her six children and their spouses, Virginia and Harry Nicholas of Petersburgh, Harry Dennis Matala and Tammy Warrington of Troy, Matthew and Rebecca Matala of Malta, Jonathan and Kimberly Matala of Cohoes, Todd and Stacey Matala of Valley Falls, and Stephanie and Stewart Ellis of Pittstown, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her late husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother.

A funeral service for Mrs. Matala will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Howard B. Tate and Son Funeral Home Inc.  Burial will follow in Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy.  Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday, July 13, 2025, from 2:00-5:00 p.m., where the Very Reverend Trenti Wasielewski, Rector of St. Nicholas Church, will sing the Russian Funeral Liturgy at 4:30 p.m.
