Melrose- Alice M. (Fribourg) Bakerian, a lifelong resident of the Capital District and more recently Piser Hill, died peacefully, Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, following a short illness.
Born in Albany, January 27, 1930, Mrs. Bakerian was the daughter of the late Harry and Verna (Wentworth) Fribourg and for over 30 years the beloved wife of the late Leo “Levon” Bakerian, who predeceased her on September 23, 1978. Alice and Leo were married in a simple wedding ceremony, in Watervliet, on September 3, 1949.
Mrs. Bakerian attended Albany City Schools and as a young woman, left school early to find work and help support her family.
Later in her adult life, she returned to school and earned a general equivalency diploma, of which she was very proud.
At one time she was employed as a seamstress by the former Marshall Ray Clothiers in Troy and later worked for the State of New York in Albany. She left the work force to raise her family for several years before returning to work for many years as a home health aide for the Eddy Visiting Nurse Association in Albany. Throughout her work life, being a homemaker, and raising her children, Alice worked side-by-side with her husband in the daily operations of the family’s Melrose farm, assisting in all the chores, from working the gardens, tending livestock, to driving the tractor and baling hay and occasionally visiting the neighbors on the John Deere 3020 tractor, “Alice’s Cadillac”. She retired in 1997.
Alice was a member of the Hoosic Valley Community Church in Schaghticoke, was an avid reader, loved crossword and Sudoku puzzles, a good game of Scrabble, tending her flower gardens, cooking foods both wild and from the garden on her farm, and as a young wife, camping, fishing and skiing with her husband.
She will be dearly missed for her quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, and deep love for her family.
Mrs. Bakerian is survived by a son, Ronald H. Bakerian of Melrose, a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy L. and Michael Haggett of Riverside, Rhode Island, two grandchildren, Rachel E. Bakerian of Melrose and Ariane Haggett of Riverside, Rhode Island, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown. Burial will follow in Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday, June 5, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 P.M.
