Latham- Bernard L. “Berny” Desroches, loving husband of Dawn Maria (Lee) Desroches, passed away peacefully April 24, 2023. Born in Adams, MA, on February 17, 1944, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Alice (Rainville) Desroches. Bernard is also survived by his son, Jeffrey (Dorothy) Desroches, and two grandchildren, Madison and Ryan, all of Maryland, a brother, Paul Desroches of Rotterdam, and a niece and two nephews.
Berny worked for over 35 years as a computer systems supervisor for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance; he was responsible for several computer systems, including the system overseeing Highway Use Tax. He was a member of the Interdepartmental Committee on Data Processing, which was one of the first groups to explain the workings of and the capabilities of a computer to people in the then new field of computer processing.
Berny and Dawn had a wonderful marriage and many great friends with whom they walked and traveled with, including the Volksporters Walking Club, of which they were long time members. They traveled extensively throughout the United States and toured over 40 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. “Berny,” as he liked to be called, was a founding member of the AA Central Office, which saved many people from the horrors of alcoholism.
Berny was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Latham, believed in God, and tried to live according to His word. He held a life membership in the NRA and was a longtime outdoorsman, but in his later years was more interested in viewing rather than hunting deer.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, April 28, 2023, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet Shaker Road, in Latham from 10:00–11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Resurrection for Berny will follow and be celebrated by Fr. Geoffrey Burke at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Raymertown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Berny may be made to either the Wounded Warrior Project or to a charity of your choice.
