Pittstown- Bernard V. “Bernie” Bieg, 91, formerly of Haynersville, Berlin, and more recently Pittstown, died peacefully, Friday morning, November 12, 2021, at Samaritan Hospital following a short illness with his devoted family by his side.
Born in Troy, May 14, 1930, Bernie was the son of the late Bernard V. and Marion (Knauer) Bieg and the husband of the late Louise M. (Knapp) Bieg and the late Edith M. (Berney) Bieg.
Mr. Bieg was a graduate of Troy High School.
On January 2, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Pope Air Base at Ft. Bragg, NC, where he served as a radio and radar technician. At the time of his honorable discharge in December 1954 he had earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After returning home, he enrolled at Hudson Valley Community College and earned an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Technology.
For over 30 years he was employed as a foreman and machine operator by the former Bendix Company in Green Island and retired in 1980. He then was employed for an additional 15 years as a grounds maintenance worker at the Emma Willard School in Troy, until retiring for a second time in 1995.
Mr. Bieg was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church for many years and a member of the former Germania Hall in Troy. He enjoyed reading, history, good music and dancing throughout his life. He was also an avid NY Yankees baseball fan as well as a NASCAR fan, rooting for both Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. and watching TV with his buddy, Jasper, the Cat.
Mr. Bieg is survived by his children, Bernard L. (the late Francene) Bieg of Wynantskill, Elizabeth A. “Liz” Bieg and Raymond Jewett of Haynersville, and Catherine M. Bieg of Pittstown, two cherished brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Connie Bieg of Troy, and Raymond and Betty Bieg of Raymertown, a grandson, Daniel B. Bieg (Olivia Burns) of Poestenkill, three great-grandchildren, Devon, Daniel, and Jacob, several nieces and nephews, and is also survived by his step children, Kathleen and Charles Mease, Patricia and Joseph Gierka and Wayne and Penny Gilbert.
A funeral service for Mr. Bieg will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Troy. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Out of care for our guests and visitors, facial coverings will be required for the unvaccinated and Covid 19 safety precautions will be observed.
