Brunswick- David J. O’Brien, 64, a lifelong resident of Brunswick, died peacefully Thursday, October 14, 2021, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Troy, November 9, 1956, David was the son of the late Francis V. and Elizabeth J. (Grimmick) O’Brien and, for over 16 years, the best friend and husband of Sharon (Bonesteel) O’Brien of Brunswick, who survives. David and Sharon were married at Gilead Lutheran Church on August 27, 2005.
David was a graduate of Tamarac High School and earned an Associate of Arts Degree at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served as a Liquid Fuel Systems Specialist at the Little Rock Air Base in Arkansas, overseeing the readiness of cruise missiles based there. After four years, with no time lost and the rank of E-4, he was honorably discharged August 17, 1979.
After returning home from the service, he was employed for several years at the W.T. LaRose Company in Cohoes. He later accepted a position as a machinist at the Zak Machining Company in Green Island, where he worked for the past 19 years.
David was a former communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Sycaway and a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #2556 in Brunswick.
David’s favorite pastimes included spending time with his grandchildren and working in his yard and garden. He and Sharon enjoyed several vacation trips to Hawaii and Ireland.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by his step children, Walter Snyder of Schodack and Jennifer and Steven Betzinger of Troy, two grandchildren, Parker Cuppett and Autumn Betzinger, an uncle, Walter O’Brien of Guilderland, an aunt, Barbara O’Brien of CA, three brothers and sisters-in-law, John P. and Cheryl O’Brien of Wynantskill, William and Shirley O’Brien of Grafton, and Steven and Laurie O’Brien of Latham, a sister and brother-in-law, Lori and Tim Alman of WA, a sister-in-law, Kathy O’Brien of Brunswick, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, the late Frank “Skip” O’Brien and Richard O’Brien.
A funeral service for David will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown, with Rev. Jeff Silvernail officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4:00–7:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment with military honors will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
