Bennington, VT - Donald W. Baehm, 87, formerly of Troy, NY and more recently Port Orange, FL, passed away Tuesday morning, October 5, 2021, at Brookdale Fillmore Pond in Bennington, VT, surrounded by his daughters.
Born in Walden, NY, March 6, 1934, Mr. Baehm was the son of the late Edwin and Emma (Huddleston) Baehm and, for over 58 years, the husband of the late Carmelita A. (DeRubertis) Baehm, who predeceased him October 14, 2020.
Mr. Baehm was a graduate of the former Mt. Pleasant High School in Schenectady, NY. In 1951 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge he enrolled at Ithaca College and later completed his bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy at Albany Medical College-Russell Sage in Albany, NY, where he was the college’s first male graduate.
After graduating, Mr. Baehm took a position with the Rensselaer County Department of Health as a physical therapist for several years. He then went on to earn a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. After earning his degree, he accepted a position with NYS Department of Health in Albany until his retirement in 1989.
In 1981 Mr. Baehm reenlisted in the United States Army Reserves at the rank of Major and later earned the rank of Colonel. He was the Executive Officer of the 331st General Hospital, Utica, NY stationed at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, MD during Operation Desert Shield & Desert Storm.
After retiring from NYS, Mr. Baehm and his wife relocated to Port Orange, FL, where they had many friends and enjoyed the warm weather. He was a communicant of St Luke’s Anglican Church in Port Orange, FL and Church of the Holy Name in Boyntonville, NY, a member of the B.P.O.E Watervliet Lodge #1500, and the Schenectady Curling Club.
Mr. Baehm is survived by three daughters, Mary (Bill) Dunham of Charlotte, NC, Lisa (Peter) Gardenier, and Michele (Bill) Murray, both of Pittstown, NY, two sisters and a brother, Mary Shear, Patricia Sherwood, and Kenneth Baehm, seven grandchildren, Meaghan Dunham, Chad (Jessica) Dunham, Lauren (Joe) Marchese, Brendan Dunham, Rachael Murray, Benjamin Gardenier, and Ryan Murray, two great-grandsons, Jackson Marchese and Rhys Dunham, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and late wife, Mr. Baehm was predeceased by a brother and two sisters, Herbert Baehm, Doris Lapp, and Carol Erlewein.
A private Funeral Mass for Mr. Baehm will be celebrated by Mother Susan Troiano at Church of the Holy Name in Boyntonville, NY, at the convenience of the family. Burial will be held at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Veterans Cemetery.
