Valley Falls-George P. Failing II, 62, of Valley Falls, died suddenly Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his loving family after being stricken at his residence.
Born in Amsterdam, April 26, 1961, George was the son of Neil Failing of Fort Plain and the late Mabel (Cook) Failing. For over 20 years, he was the best friend and devoted companion of Winnona Brust of Valley Falls, who also survives.
After high school, George worked as a tradesman for many years honing his construction skills before becoming a pipe linesman and pipe layer for several area companies, including W.M. Schultz, Cranbrook, and New Castle Construction Co. Through years of experience and his stint in the Army National Guard, 10th Mountain Division, George developed many abilities and skills, including becoming an excellent plumber, painter, carpenter, and mechanic. He was able to rebuild or repair almost anything that he set his mind to and often assisted many of family members and friends with their repair projects.
George enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Duffers Golf League at Dutch Haven Golf Course. He played every Monday night with his great friend, Eric Speanburg, and participated in many fund-raisers and tournaments to benefit area charities. He was also a member of the Dart League at Lewis’ Tavern. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and the ups and downs of being a lifelong Buffalo Bills football fan, a trait he shared with his son George III. George enjoyed boating and camping, especially on Long Island in Lake George, and loved to reminisce and talk about an amazing boat trip he and Winnona took through the Hudson River locks to Lake Champlain.
In addition to his beloved companion, Winnona, and father, Neil, George is survived by his children, George III (Nicole) Failing, Kory Failing, Michael Shostek, Gary Brust, and Stephanie Brust, his grandchildren, Payton Failing and Wyatt Jackson, two brothers and a sister, Neil (Darlene) Failing, David (Melissa) Failing, and Christina (Rick) Lippman, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
At George’s request, there will be no public calling. A Celebration of Life for George will be held at a time convenient to his family.
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the Schaghticoke Food Panty, 165 Main Street, Schaghticoke, NY 12154, in memory of George P. Failing II.
