Raymertown - Capt. Gerald E Looney, a longtime resident of Pittstown, died peacefully Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at his home with his loving wife and devoted daughters by his side.
Born in Grafton March 5, 1936, Jerry was the son of the late Jeremiah F. and Alpharetta (Wood) Looney, and for over 64 years, the husband of Lorraine A. (Rappleyea) Looney of Raymertown, who survives. He recently earned his Irish citizenship in honor of his Irish descendants.
Jerry was a graduate of Troy High School and attended Russell Sage College in Troy.
As a young man, Jerry served in the National Guard. He was also employed by the former Behr-Manning Mfg. Co. in Watervliet.
In 1961, after graduating from the New York State Police Academy (67th class), he was stationed at Troop K, and later the Troop G Barracks in Brunswick, where he helped solve many major crimes. Jerry served on many special task forces in NYC and Albany, including the Narcotics Unit, The Attorney General’s Organized Crime Task Force, NYS Lottery Commission and Wagering Board, and Casino Gambling Study Panel. After more than 28 years of service as a NYS Trooper and Senior Investigator with the Bureau of Criminal Investigations Division, he retired in 1988 at the rank of Captain, and received many governmental commendations. After retirement, Jerry was the Officer in Charge of the Green Island Police Department.
Jerry was active in his community as a member of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee, and Safe Sanctuary Chairman. He also was active in Pittstown town politics as a Republican Party Committeeman, member of the Planning Board, and served for many years as Chairman on the Town of Pittstown Board of Assessment Review.
In his quiet time, Jerry loved to spend time on his farm, where he was a seed dealer for DeKalb and Seedway Seed Companies. He enjoyed his visits with many local farmers. He was successful as an entrepreneur, helping his daughters open Country Creme, a well-known ice cream shop on his property that drew customers from all over the Capital District. He raised animals, baled hay, and grew vegetables in his garden to share with friends and family. He loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and working the land. He and Lorraine enjoyed “wine time” every day at 4:00, when friends and family could stop by for a visit. His favorite pastime was spending “family fun days” with his wife, children, and grandchildren up on his mountain, roasting hotdogs and marshmallows over a roaring fire, while enjoying a bit of port wine.
In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Jim Burden of Raymertown, April and Mark Miller of Troy, and Jeanne and Jim Daley of Gansevoort, a sister-in-law, Betty Looney of Troy, ten grandchildren, Jason Hill (Michele Cassaro), Stacey and Salvatore Fallova, Colton and Samantha Hill, Samuel Burden, Matthew Miller, Michael Miller, Madison Miller, Jordan Daley, Jamie Daley, and Joshua Daley, three great-grandchildren, Vincent Fallova, Mason Fallova, and Anthony Burden, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, John Looney, and three sisters, Sheila Stephens, Kaye Grogan, and Eileen Mosher.
A memorial service for Mr. Looney will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. at the Pittstown Volunteer Emergency Corps., 60 Parker School Road, in Pittstown, with Dan McIntyre officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Emergency Corps. from 1:00-4:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
