Utica- Harry S. Burton Jr., 88, formerly of Pittstown, Malta, and more recently Winter Haven, FL, died peacefully, Friday, March 10, 2023, at his Masonic Care Community residence in Utica, following a short illness.
Born in Yonkers, NY, August 23, 1934, Harry was the son of the late Harry S. and Elizabeth (McIntee) Burton Sr. and, for over 52 years, the husband of Carolyn B. (Calhoun) Burton, who predeceased him May 18, 2012. Harry and Carolyn were married on May 14, 1960.
A graduate of Tamarac High School, Harry enlisted in the United States Air Force in September 1954. After service at several air bases in Europe and the western United States, where he honed his skills as an electronics and power systems repairman, Harry was honorably discharged with the rank of Airman First Class on July 12, 1958.
Following the service, Harry was employed by the former Western Electric Company (now Lucent) in Albany as a communications equipment installation specialist.
Harry was a former member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church and the St. John’s United Methodist Church in Winter Haven. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #1450 in Clifton Park and Post #8 in Winter Haven. He was a charter member of the Pittstown Volunteer Emergency Corps., volunteered at the Visitors Information Center in Winter Haven, a former Past Master of Mt. Zion F.&A.M., and was a former chaplain’s aide at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
Harry is survived by a daughter, Kathleen E. “Kathy” Burton of Malta, and a son, T. John Burton of Arizona, a brother, James A. Burton of Texas, and a sister, Jane LaFleur of Center Brunswick, four grandsons, Corey Burton, Connor Burton, Cooper Burton, and Carson Burton, three brothers and sisters-in-law, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many friends made through the years. In addition to his wife Carolyn and his parents, Harry was predeceased by a son, Michael H. Burton, and two brothers, Kenneth Burton and Robert Burton.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Jonesville United Methodist Church, 963 Main Street, Clifton Park, on March 24, 2023 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. and attend a memorial service at the church officiated by Rev. Youngjae Jee at 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow the memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Burial with military honors in the Burton family lot in Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick will take place later this spring.
At the Burton family’s request, memorial gifts in lieu of flowers, may be made to the HIV/AIDS Coalition of Saratoga-Burton/Mitchell Fund in memory of Harry S. Burton Jr.
