Brunswick- Helen F. (Wagar) Kreil, 86, a longtime resident of Brunswick and more recently Sycaway, died peacefully Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Van Rensselaer Manor Nursing Home following a short illness.
Mrs. Kreil was born in Brunswick August 5, 1931 and was the daughter of the late Raymond L. and Hazel (Peckham) Wagar and the wife of the late Robert A. Kreil.
As a young girl, Helen walked with her brothers and sisters each morning after doing her farm chores to attend the Clum’s Corners District School, “The Brick Schoolhouse” in Cropseyville.
After graduating from Eighth Grade, Helen worked with her parents on the family dairy farm for several years. In the early 1950’s she left the farm and established her own business, operating a grocery store on 10th Street in Troy through the 1960’s.
After meeting and marrying Robert Kriel, the couple moved to Florida for 20 years before returning to the Troy area where Helen enjoyed the role of homemaker and wife. Following Robert’s death in October 1991, Helen relocated to a smaller more manageable apartment and made her home in Sycaway.
Helen was a member of Gilead Lutheran Church of Brunswick, a member of the Sullivan-Jones V.F.W. Post #7466 in Poestenkill and a Life Member of the Post’s D.A.V. Auxiliary.
Helen is survived by her stepchildren, Robert F. Kreil and Barbara Gregory, both of California, her brothers and sisters, Lena Colty of Sycaway, Alice Hetman of Florida, Myra Wagar of North Greenbush, Dorothy Maxon of Brunswick, Calvin L. Wagar of Brunswick and Alton and Pat Wagar of Eagle Mills, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition, she was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Naomi Wagar, Kenneth C. Wager, Floyd W. Wagar, Bertha Kaschak and John E. Wagar.
A graveside inurnment ceremony honoring Helen will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 10:00 A.M. at the Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick. There will be no public calling.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the “Resident’s Activities Fund” c/o Van Rensselaer Manor, 85 Bloomingrove Drive, Troy, NY 12180 or to Community Hospice, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 in memory of Helen Kreil.
