Pittstown- Sergeant Kenneth David Phillips, 29, known to all his friends as “Freedom Phillips” or just “Freedom,” left this life suddenly, Wednesday, October 12, 2022.
Born in Troy, January 22, 1993, Kenny is the son of Jerry S. and Kimberley (MacCue) Phillips, the husband of Haley Phillips, and father of Wade Phillips.
Kenny was very proud of his military service. He enlisted in the United States Army after high school and completed three tours of duty overseas, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. After eight years of service in which he was awarded many commendations, decorations, and citations for meritorious service in imminently dangerous and forward areas, he was honorably discharged in November 2020 due to combat related injuries.
We will never know what Kenny went through and saw, but hope to always remember his amazing personality, smile, laugh, and his natural talent to turn an average night into a karaoke and dance party. He was an incredible father and friend and an absolute pleasure to be around.
We don’t think anything could ever fill the hole left in our hearts by the loss of Kenny. All we can ask of him is that he keep the music up loud and the drinks ice cold until we meet him again in the after party. For anyone reading this, we believe he would say, “Be kind and talk to each other--everyone you meet is fighting their own battle you may know nothing about.”
In addition to his parents, wife, and son, Kenny is survived by maternal grandparents, Tim and Sandra MacCue, his loving, supportive companion and best friend, Erika Dobriko, three devoted brothers, Jerry, Timmy, and Scott, five beautiful nieces, Sarah, Katrina, Mia, Aria, and Emma, a nephew Colin, 18 aunts and uncles, as well as many, many cousins. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Marlene Phillips. We apologize for not listing everyone and hope you all understand.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Faith Lutheran Church, 50 Leversee Road (NYS Route 40), in Speigletown from 4:00-7:00 p.m. A funeral service for Kenny will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at 11:15 a.m. at the church with Rev. Kate Drefke officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Veterans Cemetery in Schuylerville. As we all know, Kenny was all about “America and Freedom.” To honor that sentiment and Kenny, the family asks that if attending, please be respectful, but wear what you want to Kenny’s services, whether dressed up or casual, but please wear something, even if it is just a pin, to honor Kenny--think USA or The Grateful Dead.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wade Phillips Custodial Account, in care of any Pioneer Bank Branch in memory of Kenny. Please feel free to contact Kenny’s brother, Timothy Phillips, for questions or additional information regarding donations to this account. If asked by the bank, Wade’s date of birth is August 9, 2018.
