Brunswick- Madeline P. (Sponable) McGuirk, 96, a longtime resident of the Town of Brunswick, died peacefully in the comfort of her home with her family by her side December 7, 2022, following a short illness.
Born in Troy, April 7, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Leman and Lucia (Rich) Sponable and, for over 77 years, the devoted wife of the late Thomas P. McGuirk, who predeceased her January 20, 2019. Mr. and Mrs. McGuirk were married September 4, 1942.
Mrs. McGuirk attended Troy City Schools.
As a young woman, she worked at several area businesses prior to her marriage, becoming a homemaker, and raising her family. Most recently, she was employed for several years as a nurse’s aide at Samaritan Hospital in Troy before enjoying retirement in the late 1990’s.
Mrs. McGuirk was a friend of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church and enjoyed the pleasure of listening to the church bell choir. She was an avid reader, a wonderful cook, loved to bird watch from her window, especially humming birds, and enjoyed the hobbies of sewing and gardening, and stayed sharp by solving crossword puzzles.
Mrs. McGuirk is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas M. McGuirk of Florida, Michael and Terry McGuirk of Speigletown, and James and Judy McGuirk of Latham, a brother, Leman Sponable of Mechanicville, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. McGuirk was predeceased by a brother and grandson, the late Lawrence Sponable and John McGuirk.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service for Mrs. McGuirk that will be held later this spring at Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick.
