Eagle Mills- Mark O. Pollock Sr., 92, a lifelong resident of Dater Hill Road, died peacefully, Monday, April 2, 2018, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany following a short illness.
Born in Eagle Mills, February 7, 1926, Mark was the son of the late Fred H. and Helen (Newcomb) Pollock and, for over 70 years, the devoted husband of Carolyn F. (Patton) Pollock of Eagle Mills, who survives.
Mr. Pollock was educated in the “Draper” District #9, one-room school in Eagle Mills
.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on December 7, 1943, and was stationed in the Central Pacific Theatre during World War II. He participated in both the battle of Okinawa and the occupation of Yokosuka, Japan. During his three year tour of duty, he excelled and later instructed in the outfitting of armaments on airplanes, earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was qualified as a Rifle Sharpshooter, hitting 297 out of 300 targets during testing. He was honorably discharged on May 10, 1946.
Mark returned to the quiet of his beloved Eagle Mills and on August 10, 1947, married his sweetheart and love of his life, Carolyn Patton. Together they built their home on of part the old family farm, which they would share for the next 70 years together and raise their family.
Mark worked for many years with his late, older brother, Robert, first as a lumber salesman at the former Eastside Hardware Co. in Albia and later as the manager of former Pollock’s Home Center in Brunswick. Even though Mark retired at the age of 65, he continued to work at the Home Center for several more years, visiting and assisting many friends and neighbors with their purchases in his genuinely warm and kind manner.
In his quiet time, Mark enjoyed being at his home and caring for his property. He was a true family man and found relaxation in spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends that may have stopped by for a visit.
In addition to his wife, Carolyn, Mr. Pollock is survived by his children, Mark O. Pollock Jr. of Niskayuna, John E. (Susan) Pollock of Rotterdam, Timothy T. (Cheryl) Pollock of Eagle Mills, Nancy A. Backhaus of Ballston Lake, Jeffrey R. (Cindy) Pollock of Center Brunswick and Barbara P. (Darren) Galipeau of Eagle Mills, a sister, Constance Pollock, and a brother-in-law, Raymond Patton, both of Eagle Mills, 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pollock was predeceased by his brother, F. Robert Pollock, and sisters, Mildred Lang, Ruth McGuire, Edith Gajeway, and Marion Patton, and a grandson, Joshua H. Pollock.
