Eagle Mills- Michael T. “Mickey” Martin, 76, a lifelong resident of Eagle Mills, died peacefully, Saturday, December 24, 2016, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, following a short illness.
Born in Troy, August 1, 1940, Mike was the son of the late Michael E. and Mary Rita (Doran) Martin and for over 12 years, the husband of Christine M. (Grady) Martin, of Eagle Mills, who survives. Mike and Christine were married on October 29, 2004.
Mike was a graduate of LaSalle Institute in Troy and earned an Associates Degree from Clarkston University.
On July 1, 1959 he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. After serving both stateside and at sea during the Cuban missile crisis, he was honorably discharged after 4 years of service as a Boatsman’s Mate 3rd class on June 28, 1963.
For almost 40 years, Mr. Martin was employed by Niagara Mohawk Power Company in Cohoes and for 20 years was a member of the I.B.E.W. Union, local #97 in Albany. After working his way through the ranks and paying his dues, “Mickey” as he was known to “his guys,” was promoted to and enjoyed the position of crew supervisor while working with his men. He retired in 2004.
He was devoted to his community and expressed that through his more than 60 years of continuous service as a life member of the Eagle Mills Volunteer Fire Company. He was well respected for his knowledge and experience of fighting fires and leadership and organizational skills within the fire fighting community. He held many posts at the Eagle Mills fire house, including assistant chief several times and district commissioner for many years.
Under his loud and gruff exterior, Mike was a “teddy bear” who looked forward to camping with his family at King Phillips Campground in Lake George each summer, fishing to get away, and hunting in the fall, even if it meant falling asleep in a tree stand.
In addition to his wife, Christine, Mike is survived by his children, Daniel P. Martin of Troy, Thomas M. and Julie Martin of Eagle Mills and his grandchildren, Matthew and Paige Martin, Celia, Emmaline and Braden, his great-granddaughter, Carleigh Martin, a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Beth and Dr. Roger Reville of Peterborough, NH and two nephews. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Kelley and Rudy Caiazza of Eagle Mills, Janine and Jason Conlen of Cohoes and Amanda and Kyle Schongar of Brunswick,, step grandchildren, Rudy Jr., Christopher, Gabriella, Nicholas and Anthony , and his former wife, Mary Kenney of Troy. In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by a stepson, the late John A. Lanesey and a host of other family members.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the Martin family at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., with Eagle Mills Volunteer Fire Company Chaplain, Rev. Chris Swanson, officiating. There will be no calling. A public graveside memorial service with Coast Guard military honors will be held at the Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick on Memorial Day, May 29, 2017, at a time to be announced.
