Grafton- Phillip J. “Pop” Weeden, 84, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, March 24, 2016, surrounded by his loving and devoted family.
Born June 27, 1931 in Pittstown, Phillip was the son of the late Zora and Martha (Sheffer) Weeden and for 55 years, the husband of the late Ann M. Weeden. Phil and Ann were married at St. Monica’s Church in Johnsonville on February 13, 1958.
As the youngest of a family of 12 siblings, Phil attended the Groveside School House in Pittstown. After schooling, Phil continued to work and support his Quaker Street family farm up until pursuing other employment in local construction trades. Phil supported Ann and his three children while employed for 32 years as a mason for Matzen Construction in Raymertown, NY. He was widely held in high regard by his co-workers as a working man’s man, rigid in demeanor (at work), priding himself through his craft, particularly his soundly constructed stonework.
A resident of Pittstown and Grafton, NY, Phil was enlivened by social interaction, most often donning a gracious smile and bearing a loud and unmistakable laugh. All that knew Phil were either a recipient of a sturdy handshake or at the mercy of his clutching hug.
Known for his gentleness and humility, Phil’s heart was proportional to his hands, great in size and warmth. There was little to nothing he wouldn’t do for those he loved especially his family. Phil adored his family; they were his world and he lived for them. Although he will be missed, he is and undoubtedly remains a true blessing to all their lives. For that they are forever grateful.
Phil is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery E. and Lois Weeden of Pittstown, daughter, Debra A. Weeden of Manchester and daughter and son-in-law, Donna L. and David Wagar of Grafton, and also three grandchildren, Nicholas and (Heather) Yetto, Marissa Wagar and Ryan Yetto. Phil is also survived by his twin sister, Phyllis Smith and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Phil is predeceased by his siblings: Ruth, Warren, Wesley, Lorin, Helen, Charlotte, Katie, Celia, John and Janet.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 7:15 P.M. at the Hope United Methodist Church, 566 Brunswick Road, located in Eagle Mills, with the Rev. Gaylord Campbell officiating.
