Pittstown- Robert J. “Bob” Phoenix, 79, a longtime resident of Pittstown, died peacefully, Tuesday, November 1, 2022, in the comfort of his home overlooking the fields and woods, with his family by his side following a short illness.
Born in Cohoes, January 5, 1943, Bob was the son of the late Stanley and Lena (Clairmont) Phoenix and, for over 54 years, the devoted husband of Marie (Charland) Phoenix of Pittstown, who survives.
Bob was a graduate of Cohoes High School and a veteran of the United States Army Reserve.
As a young man, he was employed for many years as a painter at the Watervliet Arsenal and, more recently, as a home health aide by the Adept Home Health Care in Troy. Bob retired in 2018.
While not a member of any particular church, Bob attended Sunday service at several of the Pittstown area churches, as his schedule would allow. He was a true servant to the community and volunteered for more than 30 years at the Pittstown Area Food Pantry as a sorter, deliveryman, and a clerk. He also made time to visit many area nursing home facilities, stopping in to visit those in need of a smiling face to brighten their day or a much needed visit for comfort. Even on family vacation trips to the southern Maine beaches that he loved to travel to, Bob made it a point to visit shut-in folks. Bob was always willing to help those in need and often assisted area folks with rides to doctor appointments or volunteer to assist when moving.
In addition to his wife, Marie, Bob is survived by his children, Mark R. and Natalie Phoenix of Nassau, Marianne and Mark Hall of Berlin, and Paul W. (and Collen) Phoenix of Speigletown, five grandchildren, Kevin, Kendra, Trevar, Justin, and Miranda, a brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Lois Phoenix of East Greenbush, and a sister and brother-in-law, Anne and William Varcasio of Charlton, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, the late Nancy Goben.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Bob on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pittstown United Methodist Church, 57 Old Route 7 in Pittstown with Rev. Jim Knapp officiating. A light reception for family and friends will follow at the Fellowship Hall adjacent to the church in Pittstown. Burial will be private in St Mary’s Cemetery in Nassau at the convenience of the family.
At the Phoenix family’s request, memorial contributions in honor of Bob’s 30+ years of service may be made to the Pittstown Area Food Pantry, c/o Pittstown Town Hall, 97 Tomhannock Road, Valley Falls, NY 12185, in memory of Robert J. Phoenix.
Bob’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff and doctors of Community Hospice for their excellent care and support during the time that Bob was under their care.
