Brunswick- Robert T. Hyde, 81, a lifelong resident of Brunswick, died peacefully Friday, March 24, 2017, at the Hoosick Road home where he was born and lived his entire life, with his family by his side, following a long illness.
Born May 12, 1935, Mr. Hyde was the son of the late Robert H. and Emily Paige (Gemmill) Hyde and for over 41 years the devoted husband of the late Mabel E. (Fancher) Hyde who predeceased him on November 11, 1999. Bob and Mabel were married on May 24, 1958.
Mr. Hyde was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School.
After working for a short time as a soda and hot dog vendor at the former Carrolls Grove Speedway where he fell in love with stockcar racing, he enlisted in the United States Army on September 15, 1957. After completing basic training, he earned the rank of Private and was awarded the Expert Marksman Ribbon with M-1 rifle. At the convenience of the Army, he was honorably discharged on March 14, 1958 and remanded to serve out his regular term of duty with the United States Army Reserve.
Upon returning home from the service, Bob was employed as a truck driver by several area businesses including the former Bryce Dairy, the former Troy Buick Sales and Service (now Bob Karl’s Used Cars), the former King Fuels Company and the William H. Ebel Trucking Company in Averill Park, he was also an EMT with the former Troy Ambulance Service. Most recently he was employed as a forklift operator and safety technician by the former Garden-Way Company in Troy until retiring in 1994.
Bob was an auto racing enthusiast all of his life. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and dirt track stock car racing, especially rooting for and working with the Kenny Tremont 115 team at Lebanon Valley Speedway. Bob was a member of the Troy Pistol League where he enjoyed competitive target shooting and in his quiet time loved camping and boating in the Adirondacks, especially Lake George.
Bob is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda E. and William Davis of Utica, MI and a son and daughter-in-law, Richard “Rick” T. and Margaret Hyde of Brunswick, a brother-in-law, Arnold Fancher of Howes Cave, two sisters-in-law, Florence Warner of Florida and Allegra Butler, of Tribes Hill, three grandsons, Brandon Fearnley, Brian Fearnley and Daniel Fearnley, all of Michigan, three great-grandchildren, Autumn Fearnley, Drake Fearnley, and Aiden Fearnley, all of Michigan, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at 6:30 P.M. at the Howard B. Tate and Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 New York Route 7, located in Raymertown. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3:30 – 6:30 P.M. prior to the service. Inurnment with military honors for Bob and committal prayers for Mabel will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Veterans Cemetery in Schuylerville, at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions if desired, may be made to the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 in memory of Robert T. Hyde.
