Pittstown- Sally M. (Warren) Backus, 91, formerly of Poestenkill and more recently Pittstown, died peacefully Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy with her devoted husband and loving family by her side, following a long illness.
Born at Snyder’s Lake (Town of North Greenbush) May 7, 1932, Sally was the youngest of seven children born to the late Hugh and Clara (Leffler) Warren. For over 26 years, she has been the wife of Herbert P. “Herb” Backus of Pittstown, whom she married on February 1, 1997, and for 40 years was the wife of the late Edward R. Vermilyea, who predeceased her in 1990.
Sally was a graduate of Averill Park High School.
As a younger woman, in addition to being a wonderful mother and homemaker, Sally was employed as a credit clerk by the former Montgomery Ward and Co. in Menands. More recently, she was employed as an account clerk by the NYS University Construction Fund in Albany. After 18 years of service, she retired in June 1995.
Sally was a member of the Pittstown United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s group and very active and devoted to her church community. In addition to caring for her husband and home, she loved visiting with her family and friends and enjoyed the hobbies of square dancing, bowling, Bananagrams and card games of all kinds.
In addition to her husband, Herb, Sally is survived by her children, Judith and Stuart Grattan, Sharon Vermilyea and Carol West, James and Susan Vermilyea, Patrica and Paul Snyder, Gerald and Grace Vermilyea, Ellen and John Dragonette, Christine Backus and John Kwaznowski, and Timothy and Laura Backus, 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and first husband, she was predeceased by her sister and brothers, Dorothy Haverlick, Joseph Warren, John Warren, Albert Warren, Charles Warren, and William Warren.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, December 29, 2023, at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown, from 2:00-6:00 p.m. A funeral service for Sally will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Pittstown United Methodist Church, 57 Old Route 7, located in Pittstown, with Rev. Jim Knapp and Rev. Bill Elwell officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Pittstown United Methodist Church Memorial Fund., 39 Old Route 7, Valley Falls, NY 12185, in memory of Sally M. Backus.
