Brunswick- Walter V. Hansen, 79, a longtime resident of Brunswick, died peacefully, Monday, December 12, 2023, in the comfort of his home with his loving wife by his side following a long illness.
Born in Troy, January 11, 1944, and raised on the family farm in Raymertown, Walter was the son of the late George and Clara Sheffer Hansen and, for over 54 years, the husband of Mary E. (Griffeth) Hansen of Brunswick, who survives. Walter and Mary were married on December 17, 1971.
After graduating Tamarac High School, Walter enlisted in the United States Navy in June of 1961. Following basic training, he was stationed aboard the USS Hartley, a destroyer escort vessel, earning the rank of Fireman 3rd Class during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was honorably discharged on January 8, 1965.
After returning home from the service, Walter was employed as a technician by the LaCorte Company and later as a mechanic at both the former Bumstead Chevrolet auto dealership in Troy and Capital Tractor Company in Brunswick. Most recently, he was under the employment of Warren W. Fane, Inc. in Speigletown, where he worked as a truck driver for over 10 years.
Walter was an avid outdoorsman throughout his lifetime and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers and son. He loved riding dirt bikes, motorcycles, and snowmobiles, attending tractor pulls, and was an avid Buffalo Bills football fan.
In addition to his wife, Mary, Walter is survived by his son, Adam Hansen, and a granddaughter, McKenzie Hansen, both of Cohoes, two brothers and sisters, Edward Hansen of Raymertown, Evelyn Ryan of Tomhannock, Peter and Luella Hansen of Boyntonville, and Nancy and John Fisher of Indiana, PA, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his late parents, Walter was predeceased by six brothers and sisters.
A funeral service for Walter will be held on Monday, December 18, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. at the Howard B. Tate and Son Funeral home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown. Burial with military honors will follow at the Gerald B. Solomon Saratoga National Veterans Cemetery in Schuylerville at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday, December 17, 2023, from 1:00–4:00 p.m.
